Standing up for our Future

I want to work with you as your City Councilmember in District 10.
Let’s make San José thrive together.

The Approach

Achieving these priorities will involve:

Focus on Priorities

by getting back to core city functions like public safety, street maintenance, reliable public utilities and permitting services, and doing them well.

1

Follow Our Dreams

of a better San José for all with well-maintained parks and trails, recreational options, and cultural activities.

2

Fight for a Better Tomorrow

3

in San José where our distinct neighborhoods are preserved and the working class and middle class can still afford to live here and thrive.

Priorities

Safety in our Community

My top priority is not just feeling safe but actually being safe in our community.

San José needs more police officers on patrol. We need the San José Police Department to have the technology to do their jobs smarter while keeping our schools, neighborhoods and homes safer.

The San José Fire Department also needs to be well-staffed and well-trained for the medical and emergency needs of our diverse population. We need to invest in San José’s emergency services before the next emergency strikes.

Prioritizing the best tactics for addressing these public safety needs will be critical, which involves collaborating with community members and public safety professionals who are on the ground and experiencing safety issues first-hand.

Quality of Life

I am committed to preserving and improving the quality of life that attracted me and thousands of others to live in our Almaden Valley, Blossom Valley and Santa Teresa neighborhoods.

In practice, this means having well-maintained streets that are free of potholes, making sure our streets and parks are free from litter, having libraries open seven days a week for the young and the young at heart to learn and grow, and providing recreational programming that allows our youth to thrive through our community centers and other venues.

Homelessness

We can’t wait any longer to address this humanitarian crisis.

As there are many reasons for why people become homeless, I support a multifaceted approach for San José’s homelessness response including providing interim housing combined with wraparound services, building more affordable housing near transit, and investing in both homelessness prevention and mental health services.

It is imperative to have a regional approach to ending homelessness and not unfairly rely on one city to implement solutions.

Affordability

I am very concerned about the lack of available housing for working- and middle-class individuals, couples and families as well as for our older adults. I am equally concerned that our kids won’t be able to afford to live in District 10 when they grow up.

That’s why I am supportive of efforts to build high-density affordable housing near transit and backyard cottages. At the same time, I am against SB 9 and SB 10 as not every type of housing fits well in every part of the city. I am supportive of innovative housing strategies for building housing for City workers, school staff and teachers who struggle to find housing near where they work.

I will push for senior housing options that provide services such as transportation that allows our older adults to live close to friends, medical professionals and merchants they depend on and trust.

But our city can’t do it alone. That’s where partnerships with philanthropic organizations, governmental agencies and developers that know the market and barriers to entry can contribute to making housing more affordable.

In addition, I plan to work with the business community on making it easier to do business in San José. These efforts will include addressing the impacts that rising costs such as higher utility bills are having on our mom and pop shops and contributing to vacant storefronts.

Transportation

I grew up with what was then considered the country’s largest parking lot: the Long Island Expressway. Having safe, reliable transportation enhances job growth, improves quality of life, affects environmental sustainability, and helps residents thrive.

I pledge to explore efforts to bring smart transportation methods to our city and reduce gridlock. My transportation platform includes supporting statewide efforts to bring back the school bus and provide access to all elementary, middle and high school students to get to and from public school safely while relieving traffic congestion in the neighborhoods.

I am also committed to making our streets safer. By the end of December 2023, San José had its 49th traffic death. Moving forward on implementing the Vision Zero initiative to reduce and eventually eliminate traffic deaths and severe injuries is imperative. I will prioritize traffic safety whether you are walking, biking, driving or using transit on our roadways.

Many District 10 neighborhoods are experiencing issues like speeding or sideshows. Now that it is allowable by state law, I support piloting an automated speed camera program in our district, as well as other creative street designs or traffic enforcement initiatives, that will crack down on these issues caused by speeding and reckless driving.

Fiscal Responsibility

I am a strong proponent of fiscal responsibility, which – in simple terms – means I will not support initiatives that don’t have a clear and sustainable revenue source and aren’t focused on outcomes.

Accountability and transparency are key, especially when millions of dollars are at stake. The solution is not to raise taxes every time the debatable needs outweigh the revenue sources.

I care about the future of District 10 and I will be a careful steward of how your tax dollars are spent.

Like many of you, Lenka Wright was born elsewhere and made the decision to choose San José as her adopted home to live and raise her family. Originally from Long Island, New York, Lenka made many stops across the country because of her career and marriage to a United States Air Force pilot before arriving in San José in December 2010. It was during summer break between 10th and 11th grade from her public high school that Lenka decided California was where she wanted to end up after traveling around the Golden State, Arizona and Nevada. While it took a couple decades to get here, she’s grateful for being able to make her teenage dream come true and is prepared to work hard for San Joséans to realize their dreams too.

Lenka brings her experience as a working mom, military spouse, communications executive and community builder to her leadership. She believes in accountability and transparency in government. She also understands the value of relationship building especially with addressing complex issues like community safety and homelessness that cross agency boundaries.

Meet Lenka

  • Born and raised on Long Island, Lenka credits her optimistic outlook on life, strong work ethic, and persistence on righting wrongs to her parents, Dan and Yvonne. Her dad came from a working-class neighborhood in Queens, New York; enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps; and eventually became a successful banker after some ups and downs in his life.

These downs included Dan’s wife – Lenka’s mom - dying unexpectedly from lung cancer when Lenka was only two years old. Yvonne came to the U.S. when she was a girl, having immigrated to New York’s Washington Heights from the Dominican Republic. Lenka’s mom, as well as her grandmother and uncle, had to start over when they arrived in the states including learning how to speak and read English.

Their courage and resolve to achieve a better life in America continue to drive Lenka’s efforts for working collaboratively and without prejudice to build a strong community.

  • Lenka’s recent community involvement has included serving as the District 10 commissioner for the San José Redistricting Commission (2021) and committee member for the Oak Grove School District Citizens’ Bond Oversight Committee (2015-2016). In addition, she is an executive committee member, San José District 10 Leadership Coalition; community liaison committee co-chair, Almaden Valley Women’s Club; member, Almaden Valley Community Association; former member, Castillero Cobra Drama Booster Club; Pioneer High Drama Program, and Junior League of San Jose including as a junior and senior delegate to the State Public Affairs Committee.

Throughout her life, Lenka has dedicated herself to public service by serving the community through her chosen professions. She is a seasoned communications professional, having led citywide communications and outreach for five cities in California (Mountain View, Santa Clara and San José), Washington (Bellevue) and Texas (Abilene). Lenka currently serves as the City of Mountain View’s first Chief Communications Officer.

In addition, Lenka taught undergraduate and graduate classes, including crisis communications courses, as an adjunct professor for National University’s Strategic Communications program.

  • Prior to her career in public sector communications, Lenka was an award-winning news anchor/reporter at T.V. stations in Jacksonville, Florida; Long Island, New York (news producer); Rapid City, South Dakota; Waco/Temple/Killeen, Texas; and Casper, Wyoming. One of the high points in her broadcast journalism career was going overseas with the South Dakota Army National Guard to Bosnia-Herzegovina to report on the unsung efforts of these part-time soldiers in the war-torn country.

Lenka also recognized how she could make a positive difference in the lives of others through her work, especially when local viewers would voice frustration when “the system” was not effecting change fast enough for their situation. Through her reporting, Lenka has shed light on the rights of stalking victims and individuals living with disabilities, among others.

Lenka holds a bachelor’s degree in Telecommunications and Political Science from Indiana University and a master's degree with distinction in Communication Arts from New York Institute of Technology. She is a certified public manager through Texas State University-San Marcos.

  • Lenka’s spouse, Colonel Dave Wright, is in the U.S. Air Force Reserve. He is also a captain with Delta Air Lines. Previously, Dave served in active duty as a pilot with the U.S. Air Force at Ellsworth and Dyess Air Force bases. He is a 2000 graduate of the United States Air Force Academy.

Lenka, Dave and their daughter, Tabitha, live in Almaden Valley with their dogs. As a family, they enjoy taking bike rides, going to the movies at the Westfield Oakridge Mall, hitting golf balls at Santa Teresa Golf Club, and exploring nearby parks and trails including Guadalupe Oak Grove Park and Los Alamitos Creek Trail.
